Frequently Asked Questions

So... What is Crittercism?

Glad you asked! Crittercism is a real-time crash reporting and customer support SDK you can integrates into an iOS or Android app in less than 5 minutes. It provides detailed crash reports and aggregated error diagnostics. We can tell you which bugs are affecting the largest percentage of your users and how to fix them. The SDK also powers an optional in-app support forum where users can report bugs, ask questions, and vote on features. Once you fix a bug or crash in your app, Crittercism can send out a notification to all the affected users that it's been resolved.

Why should I use Crittercism?

Well... Because we're awesome. Crittercism can help you get better ratings in the app store, get instant crash reports, and send messages directly to users who have a problem, bringing them back to the app.

How does the crash reporting work?

We capture all crashes that occur due to unhandled exceptions, low memory warnings, and signals. When an error occurs, we also grab pertinent diagnostics such as app version, memory usage, and free disk space to give you all the information you need to debug a crash. By correlating these to feedback in the in-app support forum, we can get a better sense of what is going on and give you, the developer, a way to communicate with the user to fix their issue.

How is it different than iTunesConnect?

Their reports are sent in a daily digest, when it may be too late to respond to an issue. They also don't send you crash reports if you don't meet a certain threshold or if users don't sync with iTunes (we developed an app with over 1000 users that we knew crashed on load, but we never saw any crash reports in iTunesConnect, though we did see them in our 1-star reviews). Finally, we provide an aggregated analysis of the crash report data on top of the list of stacktraces that Apple gives you. We allow you to attach metadata and breadcrumbs to crashes so you can know exactly who crashed and how they crashed.

When do you send information to your servers?

Data is sent in two instances. When a crash, low memory warning, and signal occurs, an encrypted message is sent to our server with the stacktrace, time, and diagnostic data like the app version, iOS version, and device type. Data is also sent when users interact with our in-app support forum. The forum allows users to submit support requests, feature requests, and questions. We allow developers to respond directly to users who have experienced a crash and stopped using the app or users who have submitted feedback about how to improve the app via a push notification or an alert that pops up when the user next loads the app.

Is your library safe to use?

All of our calls to the server are done completely asynchronously, so even if our server went down, your users would never notice that anything happened. The library has been in use in the app store for over a year and is serving well over 5 million users. Of course, since we do crash reporting, we know our library is crash free :)

Crittercism powered apps include the official Aston Martin App - Aston Martin Explore, Hipster, and Oink.
